Web 2.0 – A Summary


During this semester in Web 2.0 tools for the Classroom, I have gained a new appreciation for technology in the classroom. Before taking this course, my perception of technology consisted primarily on the idea of hardware being the main source for technology. I had no idea there were all of these wonderful Web 2.0 tools out there to enhance the classroom experience. 

I am looking forward to having art classes in the computer lab! Not only can I provided enriched curriculum through Web 2.0 tools such as Bitstrips and Kerpoof, but it gives the students more variety as to what can be done with art beyond paint and paper. The Web 2.0 tools I have encountered also provide wonderful opportunities to teach cross curricular with technology and other subjects such as language arts and social studies. 

Having a classroom blog that keeps up with what we are doing in the classroom is a great way for me to communicate with parents, faculty, and other art educators. I have a feeling my students are going to be just as excited as I am about our newly tech savvy art teacher and all of the fun projects in the future!!




Kerpoof is an Web 2.0 tool that allows users to create drawings,pictures,movies, and more. Kerpoof is owned and operated by Disney, making it very kid friendly. Here are a few fun ways you can use Kerpoof:

  • Make an animated movie
  • Earn Koins which you can trade for fun things in the Kerpoof Store
  • Make a printed card, t-shirt, or mug
  • Tell a story
  • Make a drawing
  • Vote on the movies, stories, and drawings that other people have made

Not only is Kerpoof fun, but it is a great tool for educators. Kerpoof can be used to create fictional and non-fictional stories for any subject. Pictures can be created to accompany lessons such as the life cycle of a butterfly, places in history with details about the culture, a study of a famous artist, and much more! The possibilities are endless, and the great thing about Kerpoof is that they provide lesson plans to get teachers going!

Using Kerpoof is extremely easy and the website provides directions on how to use al of it’s features. Here is a video on how to make a picture and a video on how to make a movie.

I created an example of how I might use Kerpoof in the art classroom. Students would create a drawing based off of the elements used by Piet Mondrian. Here is my example:

How can QR codes be used in the classroom?

Now that I know more about the endless possibilities of the QR code, the next question is how can I use it in my classroom?

There are numerous ways the QR code can be used in schools. Considering most students have their phones at school, take advantage of the technology and make the phones work with you instead of against you.

Placing QR codes in books, on your classroom door, on a calendar, or even on a worksheet can link students in to what is happening in that class.

I created a QR code that will link students and parents to my class website. I plan on placing this QR code on the beginning of year syllabusso that everyone can keep up with what is happening in Ms.Sloan’s art class.I will also place this QR code on my classroom door so that if anyone missed that day, they can scan the code and link straight to the website with up to date assignments. QR Codes- Uncoded

What is a QR Code you ask? Well it wasn’t until a few days ago I could not have answered this question. I saw these odd barcodes on everything and everywhere and felt like it didn’t pertain to me. Oh how wrong I was. They QR code is made for people like you and me to get information right at our fingertips-our phones!

QR stands for Quick Response Code, and it is a barcode that can be scanned both vertically and horizontally, giving it it’s unique appearance. Unlike a barcode, the QR code can hold more information, and virtually any kind of data.With a smartphone you can download the QR reader application and then you are ready for QR reading. Once you scan a QR code it can take you anywhere from a website, a blog, a personal profile, a wikispace….pretty much anywhere.

What is that? You would like to make your own QR code? Well luckily it is incredibly easy to do! All you need is a QR code generator such as Kerem Erkan or QR stuff. Once you have found a code generator, decide what you would like your code to link people to and make a selection from the menu. Fill out the information you want to link with your code and then generate. It is important not to make the code too big, for it to have a clear back ground, and that the code quality is clear.I have link a site that explains this – QR codes.

The Podcast, Enhanced!

The Enhanced Podcast is a Web 2.0 tool used for creating audio recordings to accompany visuals such as photographs and movies. Like the podcast, to create the audio  you need to use a program such as audacity to record your audio track. Once you have recorded your audio you can then use a program such as moviemaker or imovie. Once you have your audio imported, you can then insert pictures that follow along with your track. There are effects in the movie programs that allow for different types of text and transition.

The most challenging aspect of creating an enhanced podcast in the timing. When you have your audio and your pictures or movie clips imported, it is important that the image and what you are saying match. I used imovie for my example and it was relatively simple to extend to shorten a pictures play time, just tedious .

I think the enhanced podcast is a great tool for the classroom, especially for visual people like myself. In the art class I could create enhanced podcast to share with students that discuss different types of art media, art movements, or famous artist. The enhanced podcast would also be a great tool to use as an assignment for students. Most upper grade elementary students are familiar with the imovie program at my school. This would be a great project for students to enhance their learning about a certain art concept.

Extra Extra- Hear All About It, With Podcasting!

  Podcast stands for Personal On Demand Broadcasting. A podcast is fun way to create and broadcast audio through itunes or other media players. With a podcast you can record an audio track with a program such as audacity and upload it into an mp3 format for the public to listen. All you need to create a podcast is a computer, a microphone,a connection to the web, and a camera for an enhanced podcast.Once you have recorded you podcast you can then export from audacity to your desired itunes or other location. I created one for our Web 2.0 tool class and we uploaded them into our itunes U account. Podcasting is a great education tool.Students can create podcast in fulfillment of assignments or they can subscribe to educational podcast. The podcast created for my web 2.0 class will more than likely be the beginning of a series about different artist for students to listen to in class. I am excited about this new tool and am looking forward to using it in the classroom.

Here are some of the strengths of Tagxedo taken from the Tagxedo website.

Making word cloud is fun, and is much more fun with Tagxedo! With Tagxedo, you can:

  • make word clouds in real-time
  • customize font, theme, color, orientation, and shape
  • fine-tune with lots of options
  • save as images for printing and sharing
  • view your word clouds as thumbnails, and pick the one you want for further tweaking or saving
  • choose from many standard fonts
  • use custom fonts (e.g. downloaded from Font SquirrelDaFontFontSpace, or your own hand-drawn fonts)
  • constrain the word cloud to selected shapes (heart, star, animals, etc)
  • use images as custom shapes (e.g. a portrait, an animal silhouette)
I think tagxedo could be a great tool for the classroom. It is a fun way for students to merge technology and writing together. It seems easy enough to use and you do not have to sign up, which is great for students without an e-mail address. You just log in and create.
Almost any subject in school could find a use for tagxedo. Any history unit could make a tagxedo on a famous person, including artist, presidents, authors etc. Students could also create a tagxedo to accompany something they have written.
I would like to try this program with my upper grades next year when they do an artist study.
